Silverlight-Wishlist (Part I)

Up to now I've collected rather a bit of expericence in Microsoft Silverlight since its release to web.
Working with new technology always introduces some problems and shows what is still missing in "the new baby".

This article starts a little series to collect different things we found to be missing or at least "suboptimal" in silverlight. The entry will be updated or a new entry added when we find other noteworthy points.

I will start the series with some DataGrid and TreeView hickhacks (after the click).

DataGrid - cell editing

There is a nice event "BeginningEdit". There also was a corresponding EndEdit event in the beta. Up to now, this event has vanished from surface in the release candidate... The only workaround is to listen to the LostFocus event on TemplateColumn.CellEditingTemplate controls. But what for DataGridTextColumn? or when the Editing Template contains multiple controls? Many ugly code would be neccessary...

DataGrid - RowDetails

You can register for the RowDetailsVisibilityChanged event, but you have no way to get the row data object in this method. This could be useful if you want to hide the row details for single rows depending on a part of the data value. (Workaround: add a data bound Visibility property to your your RowDetailsTemplate control using a special "ToVisibility" converter and keep an eye on margins or paddings definied in your control or the datagrid ControlTemplate).

DataGrid - SelectedItemChanged

This event works as expected, you are notified when the selection changes, the event args parameter contains all added and removed data objects. But as with the RowDetailsVisibilityChanged, you get either the data or the row object: here you have no access to the corresponding row objects (what would also be a way to implement the Details Visibility mentioned above).

TreeView (Silverlight Toolkit) - SelectedItem

The property is only gettable, no setter available. The workaround with the VisualTreeHelper and TreeViewItem.IsSelected property is not very useful, as the TreeView seems not to be announced and the visual state is broken. Clicking on the "manually unselected" item does not reselect it until another item is selected previously.
